Captain's Keeper

General

Here we have put together a collection of shortcuts and tips to maximize your experience with Captain's Keeper. Most of this information is documented in our Operations Manual and Windows HelpFiles. We just know how some people hate manuals so if that applies to you - read it here....

Getting Started Tips

Installing

Captain's Keeper installs in the same manner as any other Windows application. A "Wizard" leads you through a few simple steps and on completion the windows desktop application is installed and ready to go. During this Windows install process the Palm OS software is queued and ready to be automatically loaded onto your Palm OS device when you next hotsync. Once the Windows install is complete HotSync your PDA and Captain's Keeper will be loaded on both platforms. That is all there is to it.

Demo Logbooks

We figured that most users will want to see what Captain's Keeper can do before they buy it. To simplify this we arranged the install program so that it loads a Demo Logbook into the Windows application (The Palm app starts off empty). You can put this data through its paces without having to load a whole lot of flights on your own. You can filter, sort, add, delete, print and sync this logbook info. When you are done with it use the Tools > Empty menu to remove part or all of it from Captain's Keeper for Windows and LogBookSync this across to the Palm.

Quick Start

Having removed the Demo logbook you can start entering your own flights. We recommend that you load at least some information into the Support Databases prior to entering flights. Go to the Support pages and add some Airports, Aircraft and Crew as a minimum. Even some minimal entries in the support areas will simplify flight entry. Then begin entering your flight infromation.

CKP Palm application Tips

Opening the last flight

Here is a quick way to return to the most recent flight in your logbook. Start Captain's Keeper for Palm. Once the Month summary comes up Press your PDAs ToDo button and then Press the Memo button. (In other word press the right hand two buttons in succession.) The flight details screen will open displaying the last flight in your logbook. Pressing the Memo button again has the same effecct as pressing the Cancel button. This will only work if you have Hard Keys enabled in Setup > Preferences.

IFR and Night entry

The flight detail screen has fields for IFR and Night time. By tapping on the numerals a time selctor comes up and yo can enter whatever period you want. But what if the entire flight was carried out at night or was all IFR. Seems a pain to have to manualiy enter the Block time again. Well we thought of that. Simply tap on the Label IFR or Night. The adjacent time will automatically drive to and match Block Time.

Adding new support items directly from the Flight Detail screen

Sometimes when creating a flight you will find an item you want is not yet in the pull down lists. A new Airport, Airplane, Crewname or whatever. Simply tap the Menu Silkscreen button. (That is the one at the bottom Left of your Grafitti area beside the abc). You will be presented with a list of Support items. select the applicable one, add the new item, press done and you will be returned to the Flight Detail screen. the item will now be in the Pulldown

Changing Logbook from Hours and Minutes to Decimal format

Press Setup > Preferences and check "Use Tenths". As well as changing the way your logbook is displayed this also modifies the time input selectors where it is applicable to do so. You can switch between time formats as often as you wish in the knowledge that it has no effect on the Math. It only effects the display and input dialogs.

CKW Windows application

Getting Help = F1

From most places in Captain's Keeper for Windows simply pressing the F1 key will bring up contect sensitive help applicable to the area in which you are located.

Adding new support items directly from the Flight Detail screen

As we mentioned earlier with the Palm software you may find when creating a flight you need to add an item that is not yet in the pull down lists. With the Flight Detail screen open ensure the mouse cursor is in the item you wish to add and press the F8 key. The applicable support table will open so that you can add new items.

Sorting Columns

Tapping the column headers in a Flight Listing view will cause the logbook to sort based on the item in that column. A second tap reverses the sort order.

Printing Reports

Before you press the Preview Report button, tap on the Date column header. This will reverse sort the Flight Listing so that the most recent flight is at the bottom of the logbook and will print last. Or to put this another way - Captain's Keeper normally displays flights bottom to top with the most recent flights at the top. This is because no one is going to want to scroll all the way to the bottom of a logbook containing thousands of flights if they don't have to!

Hotsync - LogBookSync

Use the upper part of the Hotsync Direction panel to specify the direction for the Next Hotsync event. The Lower pulldown selector specifies your preferred default action should you want a LogBookSync to occur every time you hotsync.
